About Dave LaRoche

Card #258 in the 1975 Topps set catches Dave LaRoche as a Chicago Cub, the second of two seasons (1973-74) sandwiched between his early bullpen work with the California Angels and Minnesota Twins and the shutdown innings that made his name with the Cleveland Indians. Born David Eugene Garcia in Colorado Springs, he took his stepfather's surname at age seven and was drafted by the Angels out of West High School in Torrance, California. The left-hander debuted in 1970, was dealt to the Twins in 1971 and to the Cubs for Bill Hands, Joe Decker and Bob Maneely in December 1972. Traded on to Cleveland in 1975, LaRoche found his groove as a closer, saving 21 games in 1976 en route to back-to-back All-Star selections in 1976 and 1977. He's best remembered for "La Lob," his own high-arcing eephus variant. LaRoche pitched 14 big-league seasons, finishing 65-58 with 126 saves, and later coached in the Mets and Marlins systems. His sons Adam and Andy LaRoche also reached the majors.
