About Bill Bonham
William Gordon Bonham went undrafted out of UCLA in 1969 after helping the Bruins reach their first College World Series alongside future All-Star Chris Chambliss, then signed with the Chicago Cubs as a free agent for a $2,000 bonus. The 6-foot-3 right-hander debuted with the Cubs on April 7, 1971, and by 1974 was Chicago's Opening Day starter, though that season turned into a grind: he led the National League with 22 losses while still tying a major-league record by striking out four batters in one inning on July 31. Bonham rebounded to go 13-15 in 1975, the year of this card, and remained a Cubs starter through 1977 before Chicago traded him to Cincinnati that October. With the Reds he pitched behind Tom Seaver and helped the club capture the 1979 National League West title. He closed a ten-year career in 1980 with a 75-83 record and 985 strikeouts, all spent with the Cubs and Reds.
