About Chicago Cubs
Jim Marshall managed the Cubs to a 75-87 finish in 1975, tying Montreal for fifth in the NL East, 17½ games behind the division-winning Pirates. The roster reflected an offseason overhaul: the previous October, Chicago had traded longtime left fielder Billy Williams to Oakland for second baseman Manny Trillo, who anchored the infield alongside shortstop Don Kessinger and breakout third baseman Bill Madlock. The 24-year-old Madlock, in his second Cubs season, won the first of his four career National League batting titles at .354, making his first All-Star team along the way. Jose Cardenal (.317) and Jerry Morales (91 RBIs) led a productive outfield, and first baseman Andre Thornton added 18 home runs. Despite the individual highlights, Chicago's pitching staff struggled, and the club never contended in a division topped by Pittsburgh.
