About Ted Martinez

Ted Martínez — born Teodoro Noel Martínez Encarnación in Barahona, Dominican Republic, on December 10, 1947 — signed with the Mets as an undrafted free agent in 1966 and reached the majors on July 18, 1970. A sure-handed utility infielder who could play short, second, third, or the outfield, he filled in at shortstop for an injured Bud Harrelson in both 1973 and 1974, and was part of the Mets' "Ya Gotta Believe" pennant run, scoring the winning run in the season's second game and appearing twice as a pinch-runner in the 1973 World Series against Oakland. This 1975 card still shows him as a Met, issued just months after New York had traded him to St. Louis for Mike Vail and Jack Heidemann. He reached Oakland later that year and helped the A's win the AL West, then closed out his nine-year career with the pennant-winning Dodgers of 1977 and 1978, having returned to the majors via the Rule 5 draft out of Cincinnati's system.
