About Rusty Staub
Daniel Joseph Staub was born April 1, 1944, in New Orleans; a nurse nicknamed him "Rusty" for his red hair. He signed with the expansion Houston Colt .45s for a $100,000 bonus in 1961, debuted in the majors at 19 in 1963, and made the All-Star team in 1967 and 1968. Traded to Montreal for the Expos' inaugural 1969 season, he became the expansion club's first star, batting .302 with 29 homers, then drew three more straight All-Star nods through 1971; French-Canadian fans dubbed him "Le Grand Orange" for the same red hair. A 1972 blockbuster brought him to the Mets, and in the 1973 postseason he hit three home runs against Cincinnati in the NLCS -- separating his shoulder on a run-saving catch that helped inspire padded outfield walls -- then batted .423 in the World Series throwing underhanded. This 1975 card catches him fresh off a Mets-record 105 RBIs, the franchise's first 100-RBI season, 14th in NL MVP voting. Staub earned a sixth All-Star nod with Detroit in 1976, retired with 2,716 hits, and entered the Mets Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012; Cooperstown never called, as he topped out at 7.9% on the writers' ballot.
