About Tom Seaver

George Thomas Seaver was born November 17, 1944, in Fresno, California, and starred at Fresno City College and USC before his rights were awarded to the New York Mets in a 1966 lottery after Atlanta's original signing of him was voided by the commissioner. He debuted in 1967, won National League Rookie of the Year, and by 1969 was known as "Tom Terrific" — a nickname borrowed from the Terrytoons cartoon hero — as he went 25-7 with his first Cy Young Award and won Game Four of the World Series in extra innings to help the "Miracle Mets" upset Baltimore. A power right-hander, Seaver led the league in strikeouts five times and ERA three times; his 22-9, 2.38 ERA season in 1975, captured on this Topps card, brought him his third Cy Young. Also called "the Franchise" for embodying the club's identity, he anchored the Mets for a decade before the 1977 trade to Cincinnati that fans still call the Midnight Massacre. Seaver finished with 311 wins, 3,640 strikeouts, and a 2.86 ERA over 20 seasons, threw a no-hitter in 1978, and entered the Hall of Fame in 1992 with a then-record 98.8 percent of the vote.
