1975 Topps #158 Jerry Grote

About Jerry Grote
Jerry Grote signed with the Houston Colt .45s in 1962, debuted in 1963, and was traded to the New York Mets after the 1965 season for pitcher Tom Parsons. Installed as New York's starting catcher in 1966, he became the defensive anchor of a rising young pitching staff, prized for his game-calling and his needling style behind the plate. Grote started the 1968 All-Star Game, then caught every inning of the 1969 postseason as the "Miracle Mets" stunned the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series, doubling to start the winning rally in Game Four. He caught every postseason inning again in 1973 as the Mets fell to Oakland in a seventh-game World Series, and earned a second All-Star selection in 1974. On this 1975 Topps card, Grote was having a career year: a .295 average, a league-best .995 fielding percentage among National League catchers, and a pinch-hit, walk-off two-run homer off former teammate Tug McGraw on July 4th. The Mets traded him to the Dodgers in 1977; he closed his career with Los Angeles, Kansas City, and Los Angeles again in 1981, and was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 1992.
