About Pedro Borbon

Pedro Borbón Rodríguez signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 1964, was drafted by the Angels organization in 1966, and debuted in the majors on April 9, 1969, throwing three scoreless innings in relief of Andy Messersmith. That November a five-player trade sent him to Cincinnati, where the hard-throwing right-hander became one of manager Sparky Anderson's most trusted relievers. From 1972 through 1977 Borbón ranked among the National League's top five in games pitched every season, working at least 121 innings each year for the Big Red Machine. He helped Cincinnati to four pennants and back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976, going 1-0 with a 1.26 ERA over four NLCS. Borbón was also famously combative, once biting a chunk out of a Mets cap during a 1973 bench-clearing brawl. Cincinnati inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 2010. This #157 Topps issue catches him mid-career during that Reds dynasty run.
