1975 Topps #17 Dave Concepcion

About Dave Concepcion
Dave Concepción anchored shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds' Big Red Machine across a 19-year career (1970-1988). Signed out of Venezuela by Reds scout Wilfredo Calviño in 1967, he broke into pro ball with Tampa in 1968 and reached Cincinnati two years later. Backup duty gave way to full-time work in 1973, when a broken leg cut short an All-Star-caliber season; he returned in 1974 to hit .281 with a career-best 82 RBI and capture the first of five Gold Gloves. Teamed with Joe Morgan in one of the era's finest double-play combinations, Concepción helped the "Great Eight" lineup win back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976, delivering a key game-tying hit off Boston's Dick Drago in Game Two of the '75 Series. A nine-time All-Star, he added two Silver Sluggers and was named MVP of the 1982 All-Star Game in Montreal. His 1975 Topps card (#17) catches him fresh off that first Gold Glove season. He finished with 2,326 hits, 101 home runs and 950 RBI, had his No. 13 retired by Cincinnati in 2007, the first retirement of that number in major-league history, and was inducted into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.
