About Cincinnati Reds

Card #531 catches the Reds, the "Big Red Machine," on the launch pad of a dynasty. After near-misses in 1970, 1972, and 1973, manager Sparky Anderson reshuffled a slow-starting lineup in May, sliding All-Star left fielder Pete Rose to third base to open a permanent spot for George Foster. The move completed the legendary "Great Eight" — Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, Joe Morgan, Dave Concepcion, Rose, Foster, Cesar Geronimo, and Ken Griffey — and the retooled Reds ripped off a 41-9 stretch beginning May 21 that buried the division race. Cincinnati finished 108-54, twenty games ahead of the Dodgers, with a 64-17 home record at Riverfront Stadium, then swept Pittsburgh in the NLCS. The World Series against Boston went the distance, Carlton Fisk's Game 6 homer forcing a Game 7 that Joe Morgan, the league's MVP, won with a ninth-inning single — the franchise's first championship since 1940. Anderson, dubbed "Captain Hook" for his quick trips to the bullpen, later joined Bench, Morgan, and Perez in Cooperstown.
