About Gaylord Perry
Gaylord Perry broke into pro ball after signing with the San Francisco Giants for a $90,000 bonus in 1958, then reached the majors in 1962 and spent 22 seasons as one of the game's most durable right-handers. Traded to Cleveland in November 1971, he won the 1972 AL Cy Young Award (24-16, 1.92 ERA), and the All-Star flag printed on this 1975 card marks his July 1974 start for the AL, part of a 21-win season that made him Cleveland's last 20-game winner until 2008. Later stints with Texas, San Diego, the Yankees, Atlanta, Seattle, and Kansas City brought a second Cy Young in 1978 with the Padres, making him the first pitcher to win the award in both leagues, plus career totals of 314 wins and 3,534 strikeouts. Signing with Seattle in 1982 at age 43 earned him the nickname "Ancient Mariner," and that year he became the 15th pitcher to reach 300 wins. Notorious for the spitball he chronicled in his 1974 memoir Me and the Spitter, Perry was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991.
