About Gary Thomasson
Gary Leah Thomasson broke into the majors with the San Francisco Giants on September 5, 1972, pinch-hitting at age 21, and went on to play parts of seven seasons in San Francisco as a left-handed-hitting outfielder and first baseman. A 7th-round pick out of Oceanside High School in the 1969 draft, he was a semi-regular in the Giants outfield through the mid-1970s — the era captured on his 1975 Topps #529 card — before breaking out in 1977 with 17 home runs and 71 RBI in 145 games. That March, San Francisco included Thomasson in the blockbuster package sent to Oakland for Vida Blue; three months later the A's flipped him to the Yankees, and he earned a championship ring as a reserve on New York's 1978 World Series-winning club over the Dodgers, the team that acquired him that following February. Thomasson closed his playing days with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan (1981-82), a stint later immortalized when Tokyo artist Genpei Akasegawa borrowed his surname for the found-object art book "Hyperart Thomasson."
