About Eddie Leon
Eduardo Antonio Leon, born in Tucson, Arizona, was picked in the first round of the draft twice - by the Minnesota Twins (1965) and Chicago Cubs (1966) - before turning down both bonus offers to stay at the University of Arizona, where he was a two-time first-team All-American shortstop who led the Wildcats to the 1966 College World Series. Cleveland drafted him in 1967, and he signed, debuting in the majors on September 9, 1968. Leon spent five seasons at shortstop and second base for the Indians before a trade for outfielder Walt Williams sent him to the White Sox. His 1975 Topps card, #528, pictures him in a White Sox uniform, though Chicago had already dealt him to the Yankees for pitcher Cecil Upshaw that December; he closed out an eight-year career in the Bronx in 1975 with a .236 average, 24 home runs and 159 RBI. Leon later built a second career developing Tucson golf communities, including the Gallery at Dove Mountain.
