About Mac Scarce

Guerrant McCurdy Scarce — known to everyone as "Mac," from his middle name honoring a paternal great-uncle — was a tall lefty reliever out of Danville, Virginia, who starred at Florida State, where his 18 saves in 1971 set an NCAA Division I single-season record and helped the Seminoles reach the 1970 College World Series final against USC. Philadelphia drafted him in 1971, and he raced through the minors — managed at Double-A Reading by Jim Bunning — before debuting for the Phillies on July 10, 1972. Scarce spent three seasons in Philadelphia's bullpen, recording all 21 of his career saves there, including a memorable relief stint on August 26, 1972, when he stranded Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Bobby Tolan to preserve a win for Steve Carlton. Traded to the Mets after 1974, he made just one appearance in New York before moving on to Cincinnati, for whom he never pitched, and finally the Minnesota Twins in 1978. A torn rotator cuff cut his five-season career short at 6-19 with a 3.69 ERA.
