1975 Topps #526 Larry Hisle

About Larry Hisle
Larry Hisle broke in with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1968, and his .266, 20-homer rookie season in 1969 was so close statistically to Willie Mays' own rookie year that Mays himself offered the young outfielder batting tips. Two rough seasons followed, and Hisle was traded through the Dodgers and Cardinals before landing with the Minnesota Twins in November 1972 — the club pictured on this 1975 Topps card. He became a fixture in the Twins' outfield, hitting for the cycle on June 4, 1976, then broke out in 1977 with a .302 average, 28 home runs, and a league-leading 119 RBIs that earned his first All-Star nod. Milwaukee signed him as a free agent that winter; a second All-Star season and a third-place AL MVP finish followed in 1978 before a torn rotator cuff limited him to just 79 games over his final four seasons. He retired in 1982 with a .273 average, 166 home runs, and 674 RBIs, then coached hitting for two World Series-champion Toronto Blue Jays teams (1992-93) and has spent his post-playing years mentoring Milwaukee youth.
