About Eric Soderholm
Eric Thane Soderholm was born September 24, 1948, in Cortland, New York, and was taken 1st overall by the Minnesota Twins in the secondary phase of the 1968 draft. He debuted for Minnesota on September 3, 1971, homering in his first big-league at-bat, and won the Twins' regular job at third base in 1974 -- the two solid seasons captured on his 1975 Topps card -- before a knee injury cost him all of 1976. Signed by the Chicago White Sox that November, Soderholm rewarded the gamble with a career year in 1977: a .280 average and 25 home runs, 16 of them after the All-Star break, helping the 'South Side Hitmen' chase the AL West flag into September and earning him The Sporting News' AL Comeback Player of the Year award. He hit 20 more homers in 1978, then closed his career with Texas and the Yankees, going deep in his final at-bat in 1980 -- one of only a handful of players in major league history to homer in both their first and last games. Knee trouble ended his playing career in 1982; he later scouted for the Cubs and became a hitting instructor.
