About Dave Giusti
Dave Giusti, pictured on his 1975 Topps card as a Pittsburgh Pirate, was the ace reliever who anchored one of baseball's great late-inning staffs. Signed out of Syracuse University, where he also played college basketball, he broke in with the Houston Colt .45s/Astros in 1962 and spent seven years as a swingman before a 1969 trade sent him to St. Louis. That December, the Cardinals dealt him to Pittsburgh, and manager Danny Murtaugh converted him into a full-time closer, built around a palmball he had learned in college. Giusti thrived: he led the NL with 30 saves in 1971 en route to the Pirates' World Series title, earning a save in Game Four, and won The Sporting News' Reliever of the Year award. He made the 1973 NL All-Star team, tossing a scoreless seventh inning in the National League's win. From 1970-75, no pitcher in baseball recorded more saves than Giusti's 127, and his 133 career saves still rank fourth in Pirates history. He pitched for Pittsburgh through the 1976 season before finishing his career in 1977 with Oakland and the Cubs.
