About Rennie Stennett
Rennie Stennett anchored second base for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1974 through 1979, inheriting the job after a trade sent Dave Cash to Philadelphia. Born Reinaldo Antonio Stennett Porte in Colón, Panama, he signed with Pittsburgh in 1969 and debuted in the majors on July 10, 1971, batting leadoff for a lineup that ran through Willie Stargell, Manny Sanguillén, and Dave Parker. His signature moment came the same year as this card: on September 16, 1975, he went 7-for-7 in a 22-0 rout of the Chicago Cubs, the only 20th-century player to collect seven hits in a nine-inning game, joining Wilbert Robinson's 1892 mark as the sole men in history to do it in nine innings. A broken leg cost him a shot at the 1977 batting title, but he stayed healthy enough to win a ring with the 1979 World Series champion Pirates before closing his career with the San Francisco Giants in 1980-81. He hit .274 over eleven big-league seasons.
