1975 Topps #359 Paul Popovich

About Paul Popovich
Paul Edward Popovich, born August 18, 1940, in Flemington, West Virginia, was a switch-hitting infielder who played 11 big league seasons (1964-1975) for the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Pittsburgh Pirates. Signed by the Cubs for $40,000 in 1960 after starring in baseball and basketball at West Virginia University, where he was a teammate of Jerry West, he broke through in the low minors in 1963 and debuted in the majors in 1964. Traded to the Dodgers for Lou Johnson in 1968, he returned to Chicago the next year in the trade that sent Maury Wills back to Los Angeles, and earned the nickname "Supersub" for his versatile utility work with the Cubs from 1969-73, batting a career-high .312 in his return season. Dealt to the Pirates in 1974, he reached his only postseason that fall, going 3-for-5 in the NLCS loss to the Dodgers. His 1975 Topps card catches him as a Pirate; released that July, he closed out a .233 career average over 682 games.
