1975 Topps #100 Willie Stargell

About Willie Stargell
Wilver Dornell Stargell signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1959 and spent three seasons riding buses through the low minors — in Plainview, Texas, a fan once threatened him with a gun before a game, and he took the field anyway. He debuted with Pittsburgh on September 16, 1962, and stayed 21 seasons, patrolling left field before moving to first base in 1975. Stargell led the majors in home runs during the 1970s with 296, won two NL home run titles (1971, 1973), and helped the Pirates win six division crowns and World Series titles in 1971 and 1979, both over Baltimore. A seven-time All-Star, he capped it in 1979 at age 39 by sharing the NL MVP award, then sweeping the NLCS and World Series MVP trophies as the emotional center of the 'We Are Family' champions, handing teammates gold stars for big plays. Rightfielder Dave Parker hung the nickname 'Pops' on him that year, saying Stargell 'taught us how to take what comes and then come back.' His 1975 Topps #100 catches him mid-career, still four seasons from Cooperstown, where he was inducted in 1988 with 82.4% of the vote.
