About Larry Demery
Larry Demery's 1975 Topps card, #433, shows him fresh off a rookie season that made him part of an emerging young corps of hard-throwing Pirates pitchers, and it doubles as his most collected card today. Born in Bakersfield, California, the son of Negro Leagues outfielder Art Demery, he starred at Locke High School with two no-hitters, then signed with Pittsburgh out of Los Angeles City College as a 1972 seventh-round pick. In his major-league debut on June 2, 1974, he worked into his second inning before striking out Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Dan Driessen in order against the Big Red Machine. The right-hander pitched all four of his big-league seasons for the Pirates, helping the club to NL East titles in 1974 and 1975 while working as both starter and reliever. His best year came in 1975, when he went 7-5 with a 2.90 ERA and four saves. Arm trouble ended his career after 1977; he finished 29-23 with a 3.72 ERA and 217 strikeouts.
