About Richie Zisk

Richie Zisk's 1975 Topps card (#77) catches the Brooklyn-born outfielder mid-stride in Pittsburgh's power-laden "Lumber Company" attack. A third-round pick out of Parsippany, New Jersey in 1967, Zisk inherited right field from the late Roberto Clemente and broke out with a .324 average in his 1973 rookie season, then hit for the cycle in 1974 while batting .313 with 100 RBI as the Pirates won the NL East. In 1975, the season shown on this card, he hit .290 with 20 homers and 75 RBI as Pittsburgh repeated as division champs before being swept in the NLCS. Traded to the White Sox that December, Zisk delivered a career year in 1977 — 30 homers, 101 RBI and an All-Star start — and Comiskey Park fans nicknamed him "The Polish Prince" for his Polish heritage and power. That November he signed a groundbreaking 10-year, $2.9 million deal with Texas, the first ever for a position player, then made a second All-Star team in 1978. Traded to Seattle in 1981, he won AL Comeback Player of the Year as the Mariners' designated hitter before retiring in 1983 with 207 homers, a .287 average and 792 RBI over 13 seasons.
