About Dave Parker
Dave Parker signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a 14th-round pick in 1970 and reached the majors on July 12, 1973, after batting .317 at Triple-A Charleston. The 6-foot-5 right fielder became "the Cobra" - a nickname coined by Pirates broadcaster Bob Prince for his quick, powerful swing - and by the mid-1970s ranked among the National League's most feared hitters. Parker won back-to-back NL batting titles in 1977-78, captured the 1978 NL MVP award, and earned three straight Gold Gloves (1977-79) for his rifle arm. A seven-time All-Star, he was MVP of the 1979 All-Star Game and helped the "We Are Family" Pirates win that year's World Series, later adding a second ring with the 1989 Athletics. His 1979 deal made him the first American athlete to average $1 million a year. He finished a 19-year career with 2,712 hits, 339 home runs, 1,493 RBIs, and a .290 average. Long bypassed by Hall of Fame voters, Parker was finally elected in December 2024 by the Classic Baseball Era Committee but died on June 28, 2025, just 29 days before his induction. This 1975 Topps card, #29, is his second-year issue, capturing him on the rise toward Cooperstown.
