About Bob Locker

Robert Awtry Locker signed with the Chicago White Sox after graduating from Iowa State in 1960, spending four seasons in the minors before reaching the majors in 1965. A sinker-balling right-hander who never started a big-league game, he anchored a White Sox bullpen that led the American League in ERA for four straight years, working a career-high 77 games in 1967. Traded to the expansion Seattle Pilots in 1969, he moved with the franchise to Milwaukee in 1970 before Oakland purchased his contract that June. As Dick Williams's setup man ahead of Rollie Fingers, Locker helped the A's win 101 games in 1971 and the World Series in 1972, pitching two-thirds of a scoreless inning in his only Series appearance. Dealt to the Cubs that winter, he won 10 games and saved 18 in 1973, missed 1974 after elbow surgery, then closed his career back in Chicago in 1975 — the season shown on his final Topps card. He retired with a 57-39 record, 95 saves, and a 2.75 ERA.
