About Dave Nelson

Dave Nelson broke in with the Cleveland Indians in 1968 after three straight minor-league seasons leading his league in stolen bases, making that year's Topps Rookie All-Star team. Traded to the Washington Senators in 1970, he moved with the franchise to Texas in 1972 and became the Rangers' table-setter, stealing 51 bases that season. His finest year came in 1973: a .286 average, 43 stolen bases, and his only All-Star Game selection — an honor he called his greatest thrill in baseball. On August 30, 1974, he stole second, third, and home in the same inning. Card #435 catches him mid-Rangers run, shortly before an ankle injury limited him to 10 starts in 1975. Dealt to Kansas City for pitcher Nelson Briles that winter, he pinch-hit in the 1976 ALCS before retiring in 1977. Nelson went on to a long second career as a coach and broadcaster, most notably with the Milwaukee Brewers, and died in 2018 at age 73.
