About Jim Bibby
James Blair Bibby didn't reach the majors until age 27, delayed by two years of Army service during Vietnam and a spinal fusion that cost him the 1970 minor-league season. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound right-hander debuted with the 1972 Cardinals, then landed in Texas in a June 1973 trade for Mike Nagy and John Wockenfuss -- the club shown on his 1975 Topps #155, issued not long before the Rangers dealt him away. On July 30, 1973, Bibby no-hit the two-time defending champion Athletics 6-0 in Oakland, fanning 13 including Reggie Jackson, who said of the final strike, "I didn't see it. I just heard it." He anchored the 1974 Rangers with a career-high 41 starts, going 19-19. Traded to Cleveland for Gaylord Perry in 1975, Bibby later helped Pittsburgh's "We Are Family" club win the 1979 World Series and made the 1980 All-Star team at 35. He retired 111-101 with 1,079 strikeouts, then spent 16 years coaching in the minors, mostly in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he died in 2010.
