About Andy Thornton

Andre Thornton — printed "Andy" on this 1975 Topps card — signed with the Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1967, the year a scout found him playing nine-ball for money in a Phoenixville, Pennsylvania pool hall. After six minor-league seasons and a trade to Atlanta, the Braves sent him to the Cubs for Joe Pepitone in May 1973; he debuted that July 28 as a pinch hitter and made Baseball Digest's 1974 All-Rookie Team at first base. The 1975 season captured on this card was his best as a Cub: a .293 average, .428 on-base percentage, a team-leading 18 home runs, 60 RBIs and 21 doubles, highlighted by a .321 September that earned him National League Player of the Month. Traded to Montreal in 1976 and then to Cleveland that December for pitcher Jackie Brown, Thornton grew into "Thunder," the power-hitting nickname that stuck through two All-Star nods (1982, 1984) and a 1984 Silver Slugger Award, and through a 1978 cycle against Boston. He retired in 1987 with 253 career home runs and more career walks than strikeouts.
