About Bill Singer

William Robert Singer was born April 24, 1944, in Los Angeles and signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers out of Pomona High School in 1961 for a $50,000 bonus that beat out offers from 14 other clubs. The right-hander broke into the majors in 1964 and became a mainstay of the Dodgers rotation, winning 20 games in 1969 en route to his first All-Star selection and no-hitting the Philadelphia Phillies on July 20, 1970. Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully's play-by-play calls turned him into "the Singer Throwing Machine." Dealt to the California Angels in a November 1972 blockbuster that also brought Frank Robinson and Bobby Valentine to Anaheim, Singer delivered a second 20-win season in 1973 — the first in Angels history — and made his second All-Star team that July. His 1975 Topps card (#40) pictures him in an Angels uniform during what proved to be his final season in Anaheim before a December trade sent him to the Texas Rangers. He closed out his 14-year career in 1977 with the Toronto Blue Jays, retiring with a 118-127 record, a 3.39 ERA, and 1,515 strikeouts.
