About Bobby Valentine

Bobby Valentine arrived in pro ball as one of the sport's most hyped prospects, taken fifth overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1968 draft out of USC and named MVP of both the Pioneer League (Ogden, 1968) and the Pacific Coast League (Spokane, 1970) en route to the majors. He debuted with Los Angeles in 1969 and split time across the infield and outfield as a Dodgers regular in 1971-72, then was dealt to the California Angels, pictured on this 1975 Topps card, in a November 1972 trade that also sent Frank Robinson to Anaheim for pitcher Andy Messersmith and Ken McMullen. Valentine was hitting .302 for the Angels on May 17, 1973, when his spikes caught in the Anaheim Stadium outfield fence chasing a home run ball, shattering his leg two days after he had played center field for Nolan Ryan's first career no-hitter; the injury cost him his speed and much of his upside. He played a full 1974 season for California before finishing a ten-year big-league career with the Padres, Mets and Mariners, later managing the Rangers, Mets and Red Sox and guiding Japan's Chiba Lotte Marines to the 2005 Japan Series title.
