About Leroy Stanton

Leroy Bobby Stanton signed with the Mets in 1965 out of Latta, South Carolina, where he grew up working his family's tenant farm. A frightening beaning that year and a two-year Army hitch in Germany delayed his path, but he rebuilt himself in the high minors and reached New York in 1970-71. That December he became a headline name in one of baseball's most lopsided trades, going to the Angels with Nolan Ryan for Jim Fregosi. Stanton anchored California's outfield from 1972-76, once homering three times in an extra-inning win over Baltimore, and peaked in 1975 - the year of this card - posting career highs of 137 games, 14 home runs, 82 RBI and a league-leading 16 outfield assists en route to the Angels' BBWAA co-MVP award. Sportswriters dubbed him "Bad, Bad Leroy," playing off the Jim Croce hit, for his pop-up power. Seattle chose him in the 1976 expansion draft, and he clubbed a career-high 27 homers for the 1977 Mariners before closing his career in Japan and Mexico.
