About Andy Hassler
Andy Hassler's 1975 Topps card, issue #261, catches him with California even though he'd already debuted for the Angels in 1971 — it stands as his recognized rookie card. A 6-foot-5 left-hander out of Palo Verde High School in Tucson, Hassler struck out 93 batters in 63-1/3 innings as a prep senior and was drafted by the Angels in the 25th round of the 1969 draft. He reached the majors on May 30, 1971, and went on to a 14-year career with six clubs — the Angels (1971, 1973-76, 1980-83), Royals, Red Sox, Mets, Pirates, and Cardinals — finishing 44-71 with a 3.83 ERA and 630 strikeouts. Between 1975 and 1976 he lost 17 straight decisions as a starter and reliever, one of the decade's toughest stretches, before reinventing himself as a durable bullpen left-hander. He shared in three pennant-winners: the Royals' AL West titles in 1976-77, the Angels' 1982 division crown, and the Cardinals' 1985 National League pennant. Hassler died December 25, 2019, in Wickenburg, Arizona.
