About Mickey Rivers

John Milton "Mickey" Rivers broke into the majors with the California Angels on August 4, 1970, out of Miami Dade Community College, where teammates first pinned him with the nickname "Mick the Quick" for his blazing outfield speed. Card #164 catches him in his final Angels season: in 1975 the left-handed-hitting center fielder led the American League with 70 stolen bases, topping the circuit in triples for the second straight year. Traded to the New York Yankees that December in the blockbuster that also sent Ed Figueroa to New York for Bobby Bonds, Rivers made the 1976 All-Star team, hit .312, and finished third in AL MVP voting. He anchored Yankees pennant winners in 1976-78, helping New York beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in back-to-back World Series titles while batting .308 over 29 career postseason games. In the 1978 AL East tiebreaker at Fenway Park, Rivers reportedly handed Bucky Dent the bat that produced his famous home run. Dealt to Texas in 1979, Rivers set the Rangers' single-season hits record with 210 in 1980 and retired in 1984 with a .295 average, 267 stolen bases, and 1,660 hits.
