About Jim Brewer

Jim Brewer signed with the Chicago Cubs for a reported $10,000 bonus out of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, in 1956 and debuted in the majors in 1960. He struggled to hold a big-league job until the Dodgers landed him before the 1964 season, then broke through after Warren Spahn showed him a screwball grip in a bullpen lesson. The pitch remade him: from 1968 to 1973 he averaged 20 saves a year as Los Angeles's closer, peaking at 24 in 1970 with a 1.26 ERA in 1972. He made the NL All-Star team in 1973 and pitched in three World Series — 1965, 1966, and 1974 — winning it all in 1965. His 126 saves and 604 strikeouts stood as Dodgers relief records until Kenley Jansen passed them in 2016. He was also the plaintiff in one of baseball's stranger courtroom dramas: Billy Martin's 1960 sucker punch broke his cheekbone, and nine years later a judge ordered Martin to pay him $10,000 in damages. His 1975 Topps card, #163, pictures him in the season that ended with a trade to the Angels, closing out a 17-year career the following year.
