About Charlie Hough
Charlie Hough was born January 5, 1948, in Honolulu, Hawaii, and starred at Hialeah High School in Florida before the Dodgers drafted him in the eighth round in 1966. His fastball never separated him in the low minors, and a sore shoulder threatened his career until Dodgers instructor Goldie Holt taught him the knuckleball in instructional league after the 1969 season -- Hough said he could throw it within ten minutes. It carried him to the majors on August 12, 1970, and by the time this 1975 Topps card #71 shows him, he was Los Angeles's top bullpen arm, a role he held until he was sold to Texas in 1980 and converted to a starter. He made his only All-Star team in 1986, led the American League with 17 complete games in 1984, and still holds Rangers franchise records for wins, strikeouts, innings and complete games. After stints with the White Sox and expansion Marlins, for whom he started the first game in franchise history, Hough retired in 1994 with a 216-216 record, the most wins ever compiled by an exactly .500 pitcher.
