About Mike Schmidt
Mike Schmidt reached the majors on September 12, 1972, after starring at shortstop for Ohio University's 1970 College World Series team and being drafted by the Phillies in 1971's second round. Moved to third base in 1973, he struggled at the plate before erupting in 1974 with 36 home runs, the first of eight NL home run titles, a crown he repeated in 1975 with 38 and again in 1976. Schmidt paired that power with elite defense, winning 10 Gold Gloves, six Silver Sluggers, and three NL MVP Awards (1980, 1981, 1986), a record for third basemen. He drove Philadelphia to its first World Series title in 1980, homering twice with seven RBI to win Series MVP. He retired in 1989 with 548 home runs and 1,595 RBI, the most by any player who spent his whole career with one club, and 12 All-Star selections. Known in Philadelphia as "Captain Cool" for his unflappable demeanor, he entered the Hall of Fame in 1995 on the first ballot with 96.5% of the vote. His 1975 Topps cards, the #70 base issue and the #307 league leaders card marking his 1974 home run crown, are set keys; the base card is the toughest superstar card in the set to find in top grade, with just one PSA 10 known to exist.
