About Willie Montanez

Willie Montañez, born Guillermo Naranjo Montañez on April 1, 1948, in Cataño, Puerto Rico, signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1965 and was taken by California in the Rule 5 draft, debuting in the majors at 18. Sent to the Phillies as compensation when Curt Flood refused to report in the 1969 Dick Allen trade, he became Philadelphia's starting center fielder in 1971, setting a still-standing rookie record with 30 home runs and finishing runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year. He shifted to first base in 1973 — his position on his 1975 Topps card — and strung together three straight .300 seasons (1974-76) split between the Phillies, Giants and Braves. His showmanship — flipping his bat like a baton and finishing full swings with a matador's flourish — earned him the nickname "Hot Dog," which he embraced: "I'm just being me." He made the 1977 All-Star team with Atlanta and retired with 1,604 hits, 139 home runs and a .275 average across 14 seasons and nine teams.
