1975 Topps #374 Eddie Watt

About Eddie Watt
Eddie Dean Watt, born April 4, 1941, in Lamoni, Iowa, broke into pro ball with the Orioles organization in 1962, working as a starter in the minors before Baltimore turned him into a full-time reliever after his 1966 rookie season. Over eight seasons as an Orioles fireman (1966-73), he pitched on four American League pennant winners and was on the roster for both the 1966 and 1970 World Series championships, serving as Baltimore's primary closer from 1968 through 1971 and posting a career-high 16 saves with a 1.65 ERA in 1969. His 2.73 ERA as an Oriole ranks third in modern franchise history, and he was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 2000. Purchased by Philadelphia in December 1973, Watt spent his final full big-league season with the Phillies in 1974, going 1-1 with six saves in 42 relief appearances - the season pictured on his 1975 Topps card - before closing out his ten-year career with the Chicago Cubs in 1975. He retired with 80 saves and a 2.91 ERA.
