About Roy White

Roy Hilton White broke into pro ball as a switch-hitting second baseman out of Compton's Centennial High School, signing with the Yankees in 1962 and earning 1965 Southern League MVP honors before his September call-up that year. Converted to left field, he spent his entire fifteen-year career (1965-1979) in the Bronx, evolving from utility player to cleanup hitter as the club's veteran core of Mantle, Ford and Maris gave way to a new era. A two-time All-Star (1969, 1970), White set an American League record with 17 sacrifice flies in 1971, led the league in walks in 1972 and in runs scored in 1976, and helped anchor three straight pennant winners (1976-78) plus back-to-back World Series titles over his hometown Dodgers in 1977 and 1978. Mickey Mantle himself singled White out as one of baseball's most underrated players, praising his all-around game. This 1975 Topps card, issued during a .290, 12-homer season, catches him at the heart of that championship run. He finished with 1,803 hits, 160 home runs and a .271 average, then closed his career with three seasons for Japan's Yomiuri Giants.
