About Graig Nettles
Graig Nettles, nicknamed "Puff" by Cleveland teammates for the way he tended to vanish after pulling a practical joke or stirring up trouble, was one of the finest defensive third basemen the game has seen. A San Diego native drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1965, he debuted in 1967, sharpened his game in Cleveland, and became a Bronx fixture after a November 1972 trade to the Yankees. His 1975 Topps card (#160) catches him early in that run, ahead of the six All-Star nods (starting in 1975) and two Gold Gloves (1977-78) that followed as he anchored New York to four pennants and back-to-back titles in 1977 and 1978, punctuated by a string of highlight-reel stops at third in Game 3 of the '78 Series. He led the American League in homers in 1976 with 32 and posted career highs of 37 homers and 107 RBI in 1977. Traded to his hometown Padres in 1984, he helped San Diego reach its first World Series and later earned 1981 ALCS MVP honors. Nettles retired in 1988 with 390 homers, 2,225 hits, and a .248 average, holding the highest career WAR of any eligible third baseman outside the Hall of Fame.
