About Bill Sharp
Bill Sharp starred in three sports at Lima (Ohio) Senior High before a football scholarship took him to Ohio State, where he punted for Woody Hayes' 1968 national champions until a separated shoulder turned him to baseball. The White Sox took him 25th overall in 1971, the first pick of round two, ahead of future Hall of Famers George Brett and Mike Schmidt. Sharp debuted May 26, 1973, at Comiskey Park in a marathon suspended game against Cleveland, then built a reputation for slick defense, highlighted that August by a leaping catch that started a game-ending double play against Milwaukee. He won the right-field job from Pat Kelly in 1974 — the season on his 1975 Topps card (#373) — before Chicago traded him to Milwaukee that May for Bob Coluccio, and he hit .255 with 27 doubles in his lone Brewers season. Knee trouble ended his career in 1977 after five games at Spokane; he retired a .255 hitter and later worked as a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois executive.
