1975 Topps #351 Bob Boone

About Bob Boone
Robert Raymond Boone was Philadelphia's sixth-round pick out of Stanford in the 1969 draft, converted to catcher in the low minors and given his big-league debut in September 1972. His 1975 Topps card (#351) catches him early in his decade with the Phillies, a stretch in which he claimed three of his four career All-Star selections (1976, 1978, 1979) and anchored the pitching staff that won the franchise's first World Series title in 1980, hitting .412 in that Fall Classic. Behind the plate he was elite rather than flashy — just eight errors and three passed balls in 1977 alone — and after a 1982 trade sent him to the California Angels, he kept catching at that level into his 40s. He finished with seven career Gold Gloves (two with the Phillies, five with the Angels and Royals), becoming the first catcher to win the award in both leagues. He closed his 19-year career with Kansas City in 1990 having caught a then-record 2,225 games, throwing out Rickey Henderson at the highest recorded success rate of any catcher. Son of Ray Boone and father of All-Stars Bret and Aaron Boone, he later managed the Kansas City Royals and Cincinnati Reds.
