About John Odom

Johnny Lee "Blue Moon" Odom signed with Kansas City out of Ballard-Hudson High School in Macon, Georgia, and reached the majors as a teenager in 1964. He became an anchor of the Oakland rotation, going 16-10 in 1968 and 15-6 in 1969, both All-Star seasons, then 15-6 again in 1972 alongside Catfish Hunter, Ken Holtzman, and Vida Blue. Odom started three World Series games during Oakland's 1972-74 three-peat, outdueling Cincinnati's Jack Billingham for six innings in Game Three of 1972 before the Reds broke through late, then earned the win in relief in Game Five of the 1974 Series. His nickname traced to fifth grade in Macon, where classmate Joe Morris likened his round face to a "Blue Moon." Before the 1972 season, Odom was shot twice foiling a burglary at a neighbor's house, then still posted one of his best years. His 1975 Topps card catches him in an Oakland uniform in what became his final season there; he was traded to Cleveland that May, then Atlanta, before closing his career with the White Sox in a combined no-hitter against his former A's teammates in 1976.
