1975 Topps #145 Ken Holtzman

About Ken Holtzman
Ken Holtzman broke in with the Chicago Cubs in 1965 as a hard-throwing Jewish left-hander out of the University of Illinois, quickly typecast as "the next Sandy Koufax" after out-dueling the real one 2-1 in a September 1966 start. He threw two no-hitters in a Cubs uniform, an August 1969 gem against Atlanta at Wrigley Field and a June 1971 win over Cincinnati at Riverfront Stadium, making him the only pitcher since the 1880s to twirl a pair of no-hitters for Chicago. Traded to Oakland after the 1971 season, Holtzman became a cornerstone of the Athletics' three-peat champions, winning 19 games and making his first All-Star team in 1972, then going 21-13 with a second All-Star nod in his 20-win 1973 season. He started three games in both the 1972 and 1973 World Series, won twice in the 1973 Fall Classic, and homered off Andy Messersmith in Game 4 of the 1974 World Series. His 1975 Topps card, number 145, caught him with Oakland during that fifth straight AL West title run. He finished a 15-year career with a 174-150 record and 1,601 strikeouts, still the winningest Jewish pitcher in major-league history.
