About San Diego Padres
The 1975 Padres improved to 71-91, still fourth in the National League West but an 11-game gain over the 60-102 finish of 1974, as manager John McNamara continued the rebuild in his second season at the helm. Left-hander Randy Jones anchored the staff, leading the NL with a 2.24 ERA across 285 innings and going 20-12 in his first All-Star season, finishing runner-up for the Cy Young Award and earning The Sporting News' NL Comeback Player of the Year honor. Second baseman Tito Fuentes hit .280 to top the everyday lineup, right fielder Dave Winfield drove in 76 runs in his third big-league season, and Willie McCovey supplied a team-high 23 home runs. San Diego still finished last in the league in runs scored, but Jones' emergence gave McNamara's rebuild its first real building block.
