1975 Topps #168 Bill Greif

About Bill Greif
Bill Greif broke into pro ball as the Houston Astros' third-round pick out of Austin's John H. Reagan High School in 1968, a 6-foot-5 Texan who had also quarterbacked his high school to a state football title. He debuted with Houston in July 1971 before a December trade sent him to the San Diego Padres for Dave Roberts. A knuckle-curve specialist, Greif anchored the Padres' rotation from 1972 to 1974, absorbing heavy workloads on some of the era's weakest-hitting clubs; his best season came in 1973, when he went 10-9 with a 3.20 ERA and three shutouts. He was San Diego's Opening Day starter in 1974 before moving to the bullpen in 1975, the season pictured on this card. Traded to St. Louis in May 1976, he closed out his six-year major-league career that September with a 31-67 record, a 4.41 ERA, and 442 strikeouts.
