1975 Topps #402 Bob Tolan

About Bob Tolan
Card #402 in the 1975 Topps set shows Bob Tolan with the San Diego Padres, near the end of a career that included four trips to the World Series. Signed by the Pirates as a 17-year-old out of Fremont High School in Los Angeles in 1963, Tolan was converted from first base to the outfield, then selected by the Cardinals in the minor-league draft and reached the majors in 1965. He served as a reserve outfielder on St. Louis pennant winners in 1967 and 1968 before a trade for Vada Pinson made him Cincinnati's everyday center fielder in 1969, when he hit .305. In 1970 he batted .316 and led the National League with 57 stolen bases, homering in both the NLCS and World Series as the Reds won the pennant. An Achilles tendon tear wiped out his 1971 season, but he returned in 1972 to win the NL Comeback Player of the Year award and the Hutch Award, reaching his fourth World Series. He closed out his career with the Padres, Phillies and Pirates, plus a 1978 season in Japan with the Nankai Hawks. He was a cousin of 1932 Olympic sprint champion Eddie Tolan.
