About Tom Buskey

Thomas William Buskey broke into pro ball out of the University of North Carolina and reached the majors with the New York Yankees on August 5, 1973. Less than nine months later, on April 26, 1974, he was one of four pitchers - alongside Fritz Peterson, Steve Kline, and Fred Beene - sent to the Cleveland Indians in the blockbuster deal for Chris Chambliss, Dick Tidrow, and Cecil Upshaw that New York writers dubbed the "Friday Night Massacre." Buskey settled in as a durable middle reliever for Cleveland from 1974 to 1977, posting his best season in 1975 (5-3, 2.57 ERA, a career-high 7 saves) before closing out his career with the Toronto Blue Jays (1978-1980). His 1975 Topps card, issued the year after that headline trade, is his recognized rookie card. Over eight big-league seasons the 6'3" right-hander went 21-27 with a 3.66 ERA, 34 saves, and 212 strikeouts in 258 relief outings. He died in his hometown of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1998.
