About Ted Sizemore

Ted Sizemore broke into pro ball as a 15th-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers out of the University of Michigan in 1966, moving from catcher to shortstop to second base before winning the 1969 National League Rookie of the Year award. That winter the Dodgers traded him to St. Louis for slugger Dick Allen, and Sizemore anchored the Cardinals' second base job from 1971-75, his best year coming in 1973 with a .282 average, 54 RBIs and a league-leading 25 sacrifice hits. Batting second ahead of Lou Brock in 1974, he was credited with helping set up Brock's record 118-steal season. His signature moment in a Cardinals uniform: an August 7, 1972 walk-off inside-the-park home run off Tug McGraw. Later stops with the Dodgers, Phillies (two NLCS trips), Cubs and Red Sox rounded out a 12-year, .262 career; he then spent 22 years with Rawlings Sporting Goods, rising to senior vice president. Card #404 catches him mid-tenure with St. Louis, a steady contact hitter and table-setter at second.
