About John Montague
John Evans Montague, a right-handed reliever from Newport News, Virginia, pitched at Old Dominion University before being drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 1965 (he did not sign) and then by the Baltimore Orioles in 1967. The Orioles traded him to the Montreal Expos for Mickey Scott in April 1973, and he made his major league debut that September, retiring all three Mets he faced. Montague spent 1974 as a workhorse in Montreal's bullpen, going 3-4 with three saves in 46 games — a season that exceeded rookie limits and makes his 1975 Topps #405, issued that spring, his recognized rookie card. Waived to Philadelphia in September 1975, he later found his signature moment with the expansion Seattle Mariners, recording the first save in franchise history on April 9, 1977, against the Angels. He closed out his career with the California Angels in 1980, finishing with a 24-26 record, 4.76 ERA, 260 strikeouts and 21 saves across seven big-league seasons.
