About Charlie Spikes
Leslie Charles Spikes was born January 23, 1951, in Bogalusa, Louisiana, and starred in football and baseball at Central Memorial High School before the Yankees made him their first-round pick in the June 1969 draft. He broke out at Double-A West Haven in 1972 under manager Bobby Cox, leading the Eastern League club in home runs, RBIs, and average, and was tagged with the nickname "the Bogalusa Bomber" for his tremendous power. After a September call-up with New York, he was the headline piece of the November 27, 1972 trade that sent him, catcher John Ellis, outfielder Rusty Torres, and infielder Jerry Kenney to Cleveland for Graig Nettles and Jerry Moses. Spikes became the Indians' regular outfielder, and his 1975 Topps card #135 catches him coming off his best season: a .271 average with 22 home runs and 80 RBIs in 1974, punctuated by a 19-game hitting streak that April. Injuries followed, and he later played for Detroit, Atlanta, and Japan's Chunichi Dragons before retiring with 65 career home runs.
